Summary: Why Longevity?
The years 1983-1990
Give Peace a Dance reflected and reinforced how people in Seattle locally approached peace activism. This time period influenced a new understanding for the civilian responsibilities of living in an "unthinkable horror."[8]
Nonetheless, rather than depending on the government like in the 50s, people sought a new life, and thereby shifted the attitude from caution to confidence.
Dancing made fighting for one’s beliefs more casual and fun, which was alluring to a broader audience. Essentially, this dance marathon was able to last longer than most other peace initiatives because it allowed Seattle to maintain identity and harmony through optimistic collaborative efforts. First, it created fellowship across a range of cultural groups. Second, it was effective at fundraising for a purpose. Finally, it was infused with an irrepressible lightheartedness.
