Verdict: Major Economic & Social Success
The MRC became the most successful US-USSR joint operation. At MRC's peak, they brought in 4,000 tons of fish per week. By 1989, Bellingham had established a sister city relationship with Nakhodka, a place where MRC had an office. Though the MRC disbanded officially in 1991, Cold Storage has maintained their relationship with Russian fisheries. The partnership is still active and considered successful.
The Marine Resources Company is an example of a small scale business that had an impact on US-USSR relations during the Cold War. As shown by newspaper articles and a Life Magazine article, the venture provided an insight into what people from the Soviet Union were like. These insights provided the American people with a perspective of the Soviet Union that was relatable.
All of these successes were impacted by the attitudes of people within the company. As discussed in this exhibit, Jim Talbot, Wally Pereyra, and Mark Dudley are just a few whose mindsets allowed for MRC to achieve great success beyond economics.
