The mission of the Seattle Peace Chorus is to communicate through music the desire for a just and peaceful world; to consistently present this message through choral excellence and nonviolent activism; to celebrate life in all its diversity; to build and sustain harmonious relationships and cultural bridges locally and globally.

Specifically during the Cold War, the peace chorus was created in reponse to the Nuclear arms race between the United States and the Soviet Union. The group wanted to use music to communicate the message of peace and unity. The group started out singing locally then began making arrangements to sing in the Soviet Union. During a time where there wasn't much communication between the two goverments, the chorus reached out and proposed to get to know Soviet people to ease down tensions and fears between the people. Not only were they singing to Soviet people, they were singing with them and learning songs from their culture and actually building relationships with the soviet people.
